Design Process -Product Design-

Ordinarily there are the following steps as we design a product.
We go through all of them for most of the time, but sometimes some of them or in different order,
depending on your request and how far you have reached so far.

MarketReseach

Researching markets relating to a developing product and upcoming trends.
Observation on the retail shops, interviewing users, test-using existing products are also included.
Those information and experiences will be exchanged and shared with you
to work together on a concept for a developing product.

ConceptAndPosition

Reviewing the essentials as well as discussing what kind of potential needs we can dig out
with our newly developing product. Then we will propose a few schemes of product characteristics
and its targeting market. After carefully examining pros and cons of each,
we reach on a final concept which clearly defines "WHAT and WHERE" the new product should aim for.

TechnicalObligations

Learning technical obligations such as the size of installed components, types of interface,
heat ventilation plan, required structural durability, applicable materials, manufacturing methods
production lot, targeting cost, development budget, law restrictions ... and so on.

downarrow
RoughSketchs

Drawing a few idea sketches with different styling policies either by hand or 3DCG rendering
and then we discuss which one would fit the BEST to the concept we've reached at the prior step
as well as judging by technical and financial feasibility and of course, aesthetic aspect.

RoughModel

Making a draft model to grasp the scalability. Usually we make models with
polystyrene foam, modeling board or brass. We do not only depend on CG rendering images
but use our hands to shape the form by scraping models in 1/1 scale.
We are also capable of making simple structure models by machines in our workshop.

downarrow
Productivity

Analyzing the technical productivity and manufacturing cost.
We make some adjustment to the design if we face some difficulty.

downarrow
CADModel

Building 3D models of the each consisting parts of the design.
We mostly use 3D CAD application "Rhinoceres".
The data are usually converted in STEP or IGES format so that you can check with your 3D application.

downarrow
MockUpModel

Making a final mock-up using the 3D data.
Usually they are made of ABS, scraped by rapid-prototyping machines
Some of the parts are plated or painted and then assembled together in one.
We do the final design review before proceeding to the manufactural engineering process.

Design Process -UI Design

We are ready to support you in various degrees from designing icons (simple pixel icons to 3D rich icons),
screen themes and button layouts, up to planning a whole screen transition diagram.
We can also help you with 3D animation for an opening/ending movie or screen savers.
Since we do cover product design as well, we can propose intergrated ideas of what's in and out of the screen.

MarketReseach

First we gather informations of the hardware in which UI would be installed...
"Where would it be put? How would it be used? Who would use it mostly? Is he or she right-handed
or left handed or interacting besides hands?" ... so that we can picture fine images of how it would exist in real life.
And then, we check on hardware specifications such as, display size & resolution, color palette, memory capacity and installed OS.

ConceptAndPosition

In case there is a actual product (usually a previous model or a prototype),
let us borrow it for test-using about a week.
By analyzing UI directories below the MENU and observing how it is functioning,
we will find out what we could improve for the next product.

downarrow
TechnicalObligations

Then we exchange our views with you to build common understandings of what we should achieve
and which problems must be solved for the next product.
Going through series of the discussions, the UI concept and targeting user image will be fixed.

downarrow
RoughSketchs

Based on the concept, we will offer some ideas with diagrams and static visual creatives such as
restructured MENU directories, screen transition manner, shapes & position of the buttons...
and come up with a few UI design samples in a different design tastes.

downarrow
RoughModel

Discussing with the product designers and programmers to decide
which design taste would suit BEST and yet feasible.
If necessary, we make samples with FLASH to simulate the screen transition to see how it feels like.

downarrow
Productivity

Once all those design policies and required factors are clear,
we are set to work on the whole UI creatives.

downarrow
CADModel

Submitting the work via Email or digital media such as CD-R.
If a few adjustments are required when test-running the device, we will sure deal with them.
